The 72 Project
The guidance

Be ready for 72 hours

The UK government encourages every household to prepare for emergencies such as severe weather, flooding, power cuts or loss of water supply — and to be able to look after themselves for up to three days. Here's what it suggests keeping at home.

  1. 01

    Bottled water

At least 3 litres per person per day — enough for three days.

  2. 02

    Non-perishable food

Tins and packets you can eat without cooking. Don't forget a tin opener.

  3. 03

    Torch & spare batteries

Safer than candles during a power cut.

  4. 04

    Battery or wind-up radio

To hear emergency updates if mobile and internet go down.

  5. 05

    First aid kit

Plasters, bandages, antiseptic and any regular medicines.

  6. 06

    Phone power bank

    Charged and ready, with cables.

  7. 07

    Hygiene supplies

Wet wipes, hand gel, bin bags and sanitary products.

  8. 08

Copies of documents & some cash

Card machines may not work without power.
